Understanding Sleep Apnea

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common condition in which your airway becomes partially or fully blocked during sleep, causing breathing to repeatedly stop and start throughout the night. Each pause can last seconds or longer and often ends with a gasp or snort as the body startles awake to reopen the airway. These interruptions — sometimes hundreds of times a night — prevent restorative sleep and place ongoing strain on the heart, brain, and metabolism, even if you don't remember waking up at all. Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about sleep apnea, snoring, and oral appliance therapy.

Does insurance cover oral appliance therapy?

In most cases, yes. Because sleep apnea is a medical condition, oral appliance therapy is usually billed to your medical insurance, not your dental insurance. We are a Medicare-approved provider, work with most major medical plans, and our team handles the paperwork and billing for you.

Is an oral appliance as effective as CPAP?

CPAP works very well when it is worn, but many people struggle to use it every night. A custom oral appliance is recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine for adults with obstructive sleep apnea who can't tolerate CPAP or prefer an alternative. Because it is small, quiet, and comfortable, patients tend to wear it consistently, and consistent use is what makes treatment work.

Do I need a sleep study first?

Yes. Sleep apnea must be diagnosed by a sleep physician before oral appliance therapy can begin. If you haven't had a sleep study, we can help arrange a convenient at-home sleep test. If you've already been diagnosed, simply bring your results to your consultation.

Will an oral appliance stop my snoring?

For most patients, yes. The appliance gently holds your lower jaw forward to keep your airway open while you sleep, which reduces or eliminates snoring, often to the great relief of a bed partner.

Is the appliance comfortable?

Each appliance is custom made to fit your teeth precisely. Many patients notice mild soreness in the mornings during the first week or two, which typically resolves as they adjust. We follow up closely and fine-tune the fit along the way.

What happens at the consultation?

Your first consultation is complimentary. Dr. Vilardo will review your sleep history and any prior test results, examine your teeth and airway, and explain whether oral appliance therapy is right for you and what your insurance is likely to cover.

Do you see patients outside Santa Rosa Beach?

Yes. Our office on Highway 30A serves patients from across South Walton and the Emerald Coast, including Destin, Miramar Beach, Inlet Beach, Rosemary Beach, WaterColor, Freeport, and DeFuniak Springs.

What to Expect With Treatment

Every therapy has trade-offs. We believe in being candid about them so you can make an informed decision.

Initial Soreness

Many patients notice mild soreness in the mornings during the first week or two. This typically resolves as you adjust, and we're here to help if it doesn't.

Adjustment Period

Wearing a new appliance takes some getting used to. Most patients adapt within a couple of weeks, and we fine-tune fit along the way.

Minor Bite Changes

A small number of patients experience slight bite changes over time. We monitor for this at every follow-up and adjust your treatment plan as needed.
